Since the beginning of the negotiations in 2013, the agreement negotiated with Japan has grown in scope and depth to an extent that is more accurately reflected in the designation Economic Partnership Agreement.

The euro has also gained market share in internal and external trade in goods and services, but with regards to financial markets, the situation is broadly the same as before 1999 - although there has been one clear success, international euro-bond markets (though demand is mostly euro area-based).
