Pourtant, c'est à Québec, en 1665, que le premier cheval donné par le roi de France, Louis XIV, a foulé le sol, et c'est en Nouvelle-France que cette race, qu'on allait désormais appeler «canadienne», a prospéré, si bien que son nombre atteignait 12 000 en 1760.
