The title Usher of the Black Rod refers to the ebony cane that he or she carries as a symbol of his or her authority.

The symbol of this ceremonial office is the Black Rod, an ebony-stained cane.

The Black Rod is named after the ebony stick used to knock on the doors of the House of Commons chamber to gain admission to the lower house.
