While I work locally to promote organ donation, let me try to think globally and present a bit of a national perspective from my background as a past president of the Canadian Transplantation Society and a representative to the Canadian Coalition on Organ Donor Awareness at that time; former co-chair of Organ Sharing Canada, in its initiative to increase organ donation in Canada; acting chair of the expert working group advising Health Canada in establishing standards for organ and tissue transplantation; and member of the Links to ...[+++] Success advisory group, a group established by the Kidney Foundation of Canada to promote organ donation in this country.

But, as I said, we really tried to set it up in a universal way, those issues ranging from promotion and prevention, to how we approach mental health care, to how we can better build an integrated, coordinated and seamless service delivery network intended for the population as a whole.

Speaking ahead of the WHO Ministerial Conference on Mental Health, which opens in Helsinki today, Mr. Kyprianou called mental illness “Europe’s unseen killer” and emphasised his determination that the EU should do more to promote good mental health.
