Three projects were approved which would be of benefit to both communities in Cyprus (extension of the electricicity distribution system for the whole island, improvement of the domestic water supply network in Larnaca, Nicosia and Famagusta, and improvement of the drainage and water supply networks in Nicosia). Infrastructures This subprogramme aims to set in motion a series of coordinated measures in the field of infrastructures, thus ensuring the conditions for the successful implementation of measures concerned with the development of economic activity. This will involve: - reclaiming degraded soil, especially hillsides, and protecting it from erosion; - opening up the areas where economic development measures are to be implemented: improvements to the road system, affecting some 18 km of roads, will promote all economic sectors, and tourism in particular; - improving the system of rural infrastructures, particularly roads and drinking wat ...[+++]er supply: the system of country roads will be extended and improved over 116 km, and 75 km of water mains to supply agricultural holdings will be provided; - creating environment protection structures, for the processing of urban waste and water and sewage treatment: some coastal resorts in the Cilento will be provided with a sewerage system and underwater disposal systems to prevent water pollution.

This entails extracting the underground heat by setting up an artificial water circulation system whereby cold water is injected into a borehole, the water then permeates the mass of rock through a network of fractures created from small natural fractures and then, at a much higher temperature, the water returns to the surface via a second borehole. The purpose of this new Franco-German project is to determine whether it would be feasible to apply this principle to the Soultz/Forêts reservoir.
