Regrets that the concept of supporting environmental protection by compensating for the loss in potential trade revenues and to cofinance the establishment of the Yasuni Ishpingo Tambococha Tiputini (ITT) Trust Fund under the auspices of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), as proposed by the Ecuadorian Government, which was intended to compensate the Ecuadorian people for refraining from extracting oil from the fields located in the Yasuni National Park, failed owing to unsatisfactory economic res ...[+++]ults;

The David Suzuki Foundation would like to make the following recommendations to the committee to consider in the creation and management of Rouge national park, as well as future candidate near-urban federal protected areas, such as the proposed Bowen Island national park, close to the city of Vancouver.

AM. whereas planned locations for new landfills are contested because petitioners feel that they encroach on environmentally or culturally protected zones, as illustrated by petitions concerning a plan to open a new landfill in the Vesuvius National Park, and whereas it takes the view that siting landfills in areas belonging to the Natura 2000 network should be considered incompatible with EU environmental law;

8. Deplores the previous decision to open landfills in protected areas within the Vesuvius National Park, such as in Terzigno; strongly opposes any plans to expand these landfill sites and welcomes the decision not to open a second landfill in Terzigno (Cava Vitiello);

* * * [Text] Question No. 215 Mrs. Bev Desjarlais: With regard to federal actions concerning the town of Grand Rapids and the Grand Rapids First Nation in Manitoba: (a) with the planned construction of the hydro dam in the Grand Rapids area beginning in the 1950s and continuing into the 1960s and 1970s, what was the consultation process with the local aboriginal and non-aboriginal communities; (b) did the government take on the representation of the First Nation community; (c) what was the impact of the project on the surrounding communities; (d) what is the current status of the planned Manitoba Lowlands National ...[+++] Park; (e) who were the stakeholders identified in the establishment of the national park; (f) what consultations were undertaken with the communities regarding the establishment of the park; (g) what contacts were made with the Mayor and Council of the Town of Grand Rapids; (h) what contacts were made with the Chief and Council of the Grand Rapids First Nation; (i) what is the expected opening date of the park; (j) have there been any environmental studies done on the effects of the dam; (k) have there been any outstanding monetary or land claim issues related to the dam construction; and (l) what was the total cost of compensation paid by the government to the First Nation or the town?

The main objectives in Phase II of the project are: - to pursue and extend the measures taken during Phase I of the Ras Mohammed National Park to manage and protect the unique coral reef ecosystems; - to make the Park an efficient self-financing unit; - to contribute to the development of the current administrative structures within a Ministry of National Parks.
