Calls on the Commission, the Member States, research funding organisations and other stakeholders to design programmes to actively encourage women to continue their careers after maternity or parental leave, and to provide funding for re-entry programmes which should be tailored to the needs of each institution and include the training needed to keep up with scientific developments, as well as allowing more flexibility regarding women's scientific production following the birth or adoption of a child and providing adequate childca ...[+++]re services, also encouraging the integration of men into family life; these measures should also be applied to researchers working on individual stipends and staff on externally funded research projects;

Indicator: increase the number of fellowships to sub-Saharan African researchers and MSc/PhD students from 400 under EDCTP1, strongly encouraging and supporting them to continue their research career in sub-Sahara Africa following their fellowship.

fostering capacity development for clinical trials and related research in developing countries, in particular in Sub-Saharan Africa, through grants for: career development of junior and senior fellows, promoting mobility, staff exchange grants, research training networks, strengthening ethics and regulatory bodies, mentoring and partnerships at individual or institutional or regional level;

Recalls that the European Research Council (ERC) has proved to be successful in promoting scientific excellence and a strengthening element of the ERA; calls for further improvements to the ERA's structures and mechanisms and a boost to its instruments; stresses the need to substantially increase the proportion of the budget dedicated to grants both to young and female researchers, and to researchers from innovative SMEs (both research groups and individuals), as well to strengthen Marie Curie actions and initiatives, thus reinforcing mobility (by introducing a ‘fifth freedom’ of knowledge), career progression and collaboration bet ...[+++]ween academia, public research institutes and industry, as well as access to major research infrastructures; calls on industry to become more involved in doctoral and postdoctoral research programmes; calls for the implementation of the necessary measures to guarantee decent working conditions for scientific workers in the EU, making Europe more internationally attractive to researchers, counteracting the exodus of specialists and achieving excellence in Europe;
