In 1995 the European Union launched an initiative for the negotiation of bilateral agreements on the trade of live animals and animal products with the EC's main trading partners, including New Zealand on the basis of the Agreement on the Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary (S.P.S.) Measures adopted in the GATT Uruguay Round.
