C’est l’Act of Supremacy adopté en 1563 sous le règne de la Reine Elizabeth I qui imposa le premier serment aux députés. Cette loi désignait la souveraine chef de l’Église : avant d’occuper leur siège dans la Chambre des communes, les députés étaient tenus d’affirmer que la souveraine détenait le pouvoir suprême dans tout le royaume pour toutes les affaires d’ordre ecclésiastique et temporel .
The first oath was imposed upon Members in 1563 following the adoption of the Act of Supremacy during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. The Act of Supremacy appointed the Sovereign the head of the Church: before taking their seat in the House of Commons, Members of Parliament were required to testify to their belief that the Sovereign was the only supreme governor of the realm, both in ecclesiastical and in temporal matters.
