The term fundamentalism is derived from the name given in the United States to a Protestant group which upheld the literal truth of the Bible and published a series of booklets called 'The Fundamentals' from 1910 onwards. The term was thus initially associated with strict, ultra-conservative Christian movements and was then expanded to refer to other Protestant fundamentalisms and Catholic traditionalism in the 20 century, chiefly in France.
