The professional organisation of market gardeners, which had started at the end of the 19th century, continued between the wars and became more firmly established.

Market gardening in and around Nantes did not truly take off until 1919-20, when most of the big market gardeners abandoned local markets and started sending their produce directly to Paris and the major provincial towns.

The description of the product has been amended to include the selection criteria established by market gardeners and to clarify the conditions that new varieties must meet in order to be used as PGIs.

With me are Jeff Wilson, from the Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association, one of AGCare's member groups—he is the past chair of AGCare; John Gorzo, the incoming president of the Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association; Mary Garr, part-time staff with AGCare; and Geri Kamentz, from the Ottawa area, a fellow farmer, as are Jeff, John, and I. I'm in dairy and calves, and I think Geri is in cattle and calves and pigs.

Code GS1 will be required for exports to the United States, for market produce, but for small farmers who do not export, we tested other methods of identification that could be used for the traceability of market produce.

To provide back up for the secondary sector, new initiatives will be promoted in the fields of financing, services (in particular with regard to new production technologies) and training. ii) In the agricultural sector, the measures adopted are designed to consolidate market gardening, in particular by perfecting new varieties of products intended for the agro-industry, and livestock farming with the consolidation and reinforcement of the processing and marketing capacity to ensure the rational use of assets. iii) Action to be taken in fisheries and tourism will be examined at a later stage in the implementation of the programme.
