What the proposal for a directive sets out to do is to provide a restrictive restatement of the law as it has been applied by the Boards of Appeal of the European Patent Office, in order to ensure that patents for computer-related inventions are granted on the same basis everywhere in the European Union and that the national courts deal with contested patents on the basis of uniform principles.
