Les pays du Sud et de l'Est de la Méditerranée - PSEM - (notamment ceux d'Afrique du Nord et la Syrie) disposent, en effet, d'un important potentiel pétrolier et gazier. Il convient de souligner les importantes réserves d'hydrocarbures (des réserves prouvées à fin 1992 de 6030 Mt de pétrole et condensats et de 5650 Gm3 de gaz naturel). D'importantes infrastructures de production (217 Mt/an de pétrole et 66 Gm3/an de gaz naturel en 1992) et d'exportation vers l'Europe composées essentiellement de 5 usines GNL (capacité de 35 Gm3/an), de 20 méthaniers, de raffineries (capacité de 146 Mt/an) et de terminaux pétroliers.
The SEMs (especially the North African countries and Syria) have considerable oil and gas potential, with proven reserves at the end of 1992 totalling 6030 Mt of oil and condensates and 5650 Gm3 of natural gas, and major facilities for production (217 Mt/year of oil) and 66 Gm3/year of natural gas in 1992) and for exporting to Europe, mainly consisting of 5 LNG plants (35 Gm3/year capacity), 20 LNG carriers, refineries with a capacity of 146 Mt/year, and oil terminals.
