Canadian financial institutions will have to report accounts held by U.S. persons, which include most bank accounts, mutual funds, brokerage accounts, and so on.

Unfortunately, solely outside the U.S. is related to the Nexus, where individuals are located, and most Canadian banks have one aspect of their mutual fund transactions that potentially could be in the U.S. For example, if a Canadian vacations for a certain amount of time throughout the year in the United States and transacts in their investment account, even though the mutual funds are with a Canadian institution or in Canadian funds and transact with Canadian counterparts, the person is located in the U.S. and so the transaction would be caught by the Volcker Rule.

The issue I was talking about with the tax-free savings account sort of works as follows. In Canada, everyone knows that a tax-free savings account, if you own a mutual fund you get some dividends and that mutual fund dividend is not taxable, but in the United States that tax-free savings account for your U.S. tax purposes doesn't protect that mutual fund dividend.

When an entity has an investment in an associate, a portion of which is held indirectly through a venture capital organisation, or a mutual fund, unit trust and similar entities including investment-linked insurance funds, the entity may elect to measure that portion of the investment in the associate at fair value through profit or loss in accordance with IFRS 9 regardless of whether the venture capital organisation, or the mutual fund, unit trust and similar entities including investment-linked insurance funds, has significant influence over that portion of the investment.
