Many of the goods that cross the border each day involve intra-firm trade, for example where parts made in a company’s operations in Canada are shipped to another of its locations in the United States.

Intra-Community trade expansion was greatly fuelled by trade in high-tech products which saw an increase as high as 20% in 1988. The two groups of industrial products that can be singled out as having provided an important positive contribution to the EC's improved real trade balance with the rest of the world are machinery and chemical products. The improvement in the EC's real trade balance in the period 1980 to 1988, can be broken down into three elements as follows: firstly, a deterioration of the real balance with Japan, secondly, a stable balance with the Newly Industrialized Countries in Asia and, thirdly, an improvement of that w ...[+++]ith the rest of the world, particularly the US.

On the margin of the conference, Mr Matutes will sign the financing agreement for a major Community project to support the revitalization of intra-regional trade in Central America/.- 2 - EC-RIO GROUP (10 April) The foreign ministers of the Twelve, accompanied by Mr Matutes, will be meeting their opposite numbers from the seven Rio Group Latin American countries on Tuesday 10 April. The meeting forms part of the political dialogue which the EC has been carrying on with these countries since September 1987.

The Rio Group is important since it represents more than 80% of Latin America's population, the major part of its GNP, its intra-regional and extra-regional trade and its external debt, which amounts to over USD 400 billion.
