En 2004, la bande des Dénés de Tulita a reconnu que la source de la rivière South Nahanni était importante et que les habitants de Tulita voulaient une certaine forme de protection. It was in 2004 that the Tulita Dene band, recognizing that the South Nahanni headwaters are important and that the people of Tulita wanted protection, passed a band council resolution calling on Parks Canada to begin the process to establish a national park reserve to protect the upper reaches of the South Nahanni River within the Sahtu settlement area.
