As pointed out by a number of professional organisations of doctoral candidates, experienced researchers should be personally involved in mentoring doctoral candidates, thus integrating them fully into the research environment, highlighting alternative careers, when appropriate, and introducing the doctoral candidate to as many new contacts as possible.
