Just in the past six weeks, Amnesty International has released the following urgent actions and press releases: One on behalf of 15 Tibetan monks who have been arrested following last month's protests but whose whereabouts remain unacknowledged and whose safety is at risk; one on behalf of a courageous human rights activist who sought to initiate public discussion of the Olympic Games within China and who was just sentenced to a three-and-a-half-year prison term as a result; one outlining concerns about the torture of three journalists arrested in India who have been accused of sympathizing with the country's Communist Party; and one ...[+++]documenting wide and sweeping restrictions on freedom of expression and freedom of assembly in the lead-up to the recent Russian elections.

It is why Europe rightly champions UN policies: the 0.7% target in the Millennium Goals within EU development policy, and Europe providing over half of all support to the UN High Commission for Refugees, which stands up for fundamental rights as a bulwark against the racism and xenophobia now sweeping our continent.

There is no doubt that expansion is morally right and materially necessary. However, this process can not be allowed to undo the considerable achievements of 50 years of European construction, sweeping away the delicate balances on which the Community has been resting for almost half a century.
