It is estimated that the Lachine Canal presents risks, not only for the people who live close to the canal and might accidentally fall in, but also for the water quality of the St. Lawrence River; Heritage Canada's plan to reopen the canal to pleasure boating will result in contaminated sediments being carried from the Lachine Canal into the St. Lawrence River.

Does it make sense to you that a captain can take a 750-foot tanker I think that's a 26-foot draft go across Lake Superior, traverse around the St. Mary's River, through that horrendous area in there, put it into the Poe Canal lock, lock it up, put it into the St. Mary's River, and down through Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, up and down Niagara we were in Niagara Falls last week.

Trouvez-vous logique qu'un capitaine puisse diriger un pétrolier de 750 pieds je crois que c'est un tirant d'eau de 26 pieds à travers le lac Supérieur, passer par la rivière St. Mary's, par cette zone épouvantable, entrer dans l'écluse du canal Poe, passer l'écluse, descendre la St. Mary's et continuer par le lac Érié et le lac Ontario, jusqu'à Niagara nous étions aux chutes du Niagara la semaine dernière.
