– (PT) Mr President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen, although EURES was created in 1993, as the successor to the old SEDOC, few people are even aware that it exists.

On the basis of these provisions the Member States and the Commission developped in the early seventies the SEDOC system (Système Européen de Diffusion des Offres et demandes d'emploi en Compensation).

In parallel with the examination of this proposal by the competent institutions of the Community, the Commission is cooperating with the public employment services of the Member States to draw up the organisational and technical struture of the future SEDOC-system.

Completion of the internal market is giving rise to similar needs in all areas, as illustrated by the following examples: - the Schengen Information System (SIS), which is to the law-enforcement agencies of five Member States; - the systems for exchanging information between: - the Member States' customs administrations and the Commission; - the different testing laboratories and certification bodies, for the purposes of mutual recognition of certification and testing; - the labour administrations, in particular through the European System for the International Clearing of Vacancies and Applications for Employment (SEDOC), with special emph ...[+++]asis on frontier regions.
