Recalls that the attractiveness, competitiveness and dynamism of the Atlantic coastal areas depend on strengthening their tourism potential; underlines the importance, therefore, of extending tourist seasons and of diversifying products and client bases in order to eliminate the effects of seasonality, promoting the numerous assets of these areas by also encouraging nautical tourism, cruises, spa tourism and cultural tourism, and promoting actions to ensure the linking of activities in coastal and maritime areas with tourism products in the hinterland; stresses the need to mitigate the impact of tourism activities and infrastructur ...[+++]es on the environment and to ensure the management of coastal areas and their hinterlands with a view to guaranteeing the sustainability of these areas and their fauna, flora and landscape;

Points out that coastal regions represent the principal tourist destination in Europe and that it is therefore important to give due consideration to spatial planning methods in coastal areas, the risks of extensive urbanisation, the need to maintain the quality and sustainability of coastal areas, their heritage and tourist service infrastructure; stresses that adequate funds need to be invested in a coastal, island and marine tourism strategy in order to protect the European coastline from erosion, safeguard its environmental and animal heritage and improve water quality, all with the aim of developing sustainable and good-quality ...[+++] beach and underwater tourism; in this respect, welcomes the Commission initiative to develop a strategy for sustainable coastal and marine tourism, and calls for the development of similar specific strategies for the islands, mountain regions and other vulnerable areas;

Stresses the significance of introducing an integrated approach to decision-making and administrative procedures such as regional planning, the licensing of construction projects and the refurbishment of dwellings by means of environmental, heritage and urban-planning practices, with a view to ensuring sustainable development in mountain areas; recommends that the potential of mountain areas should be exploited in order to promote the comprehensive development of tourism and the use of innovation in land development and, to that end, encourages local, decentralised initiatives and cooperation between mountain areas;
