In fact, a Consensus Conference on " Controlling Antimicrobial Resistance: An integrated Action Plan for Canadians," was held May 28-30, 1997 in Montreal with a goal to provide a forum for discussion of issues related to the development of resistance to antibiotics and to develop a National Action Plan to limit the development and transmission of antibiotic resistant bacteria in Canada.

Avoparcin is an antimicrobial antibiotic widely used in feed for poultry, pigs, calves, cattle for fattening and lambs, due to its positive effects on animal growth.
