Among those dinosaurs have been political parties: The Confederation of Regions Party, the Alberta First Party, the Progressive Party, the Social Credit movement, and the founding conventions of the CCF, the Social Credit Party and the Reform Party.

It should also be borne in mind, when considering a political response, that some fundamentalist Islamic groups provide support in urban areas and among sectors of the population not reached by government assistance and that a large part of the acceptance, social recognition and support among young people which such movements receive stems not so much from their extremist doctrines as from the fact that they are seen to be in opposition to sectors which are seen as corrupt.

Is convinced that local development and employment initiatives are preconditions for lasting development which contribute not only to an improvement of the living environment in urban and rural areas but above all represent the proper framework for the creation of permanent employment opportunities and hence are an important first step in finding a solution for the EU's crisis areas which have degenerated into social exclusion and where local infrastructure has been destroyed.
