Facilitator of the Arusha Peace Process

The Commission is closely coordinating any action with Norway, as facilitator of the peace process, and with other co-chair countries.

8. Recognises the help that the European Union and the group of facilitator countries have been giving to the peace process in Colombia and urges the FARC to end their kidnapping and killing of innocent people so that they can continue to act as mediator between the parties to enable them to resume negotiations on peace with social justice;

establish and maintain close contact with all the parties to the peace and transition process in the African Great Lakes Region, other countries of the region, the United States of America, other relevant countries, as well as the United Nations (UN) and other relevant international organisations, the African Union (AU) and subregional organisations and their representatives as well as other prominent regional leaders in order to work with them in strengthening the peace processes of Lusaka and Arusha and the peace agreements concluded in Pretoria and Luanda;

7. Recalls the vital need for an effective ceasefire between the government and the rebels as a prerequisite for the restoration of peace, stability and the rule of law; calls on all parties to the conflict to recognise and respect the ceasefire, to disarm and to progressively participate in the peace process, and calls in particular on the National Liberation Front (FNL) to sign the Arusha peace accord;
