The consultants' view is that when the Board of Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE) took the decision in September 1991 to proceed with a 250 MW electricity interconnector from Scotland to meet the expected deficit in generating capacity in 1996, an examination of the options then open to NIE indicates that the interconnector was not the most economic choice, in pure generation terms.
