Exposure to asbestos can cause asbestosis, a scarring of the lungs resulting in loss of lung function that often progresses to disability and death. It can also cause mesothelioma, which is a cancer affecting the membranes lining the lungs and the abdomen; lung cancer; and cancers of the esophagus, stomach, colon, and rectum.

The trachea and the main branches of the bronchi must be opened lengthwise and the lungs must be incised in their posterior third, perpendicular to their main axes; those incisions are not necessary where the lungs are excluded from human consumption.

Warnings: there are two types of compulsory warnings for all products (except for tobacco for oral use and other smokeless tobacco products): general warnings (Smoking kills/can kill or Smoking seriously harms you and those around you) and additional warnings (Smoking causes 90% of lung cancers, Smoking causes mouth and throat cancer, Smoking destroys your lungs, etc.), which vary on packets and whose list was updated in 2012.
