Definition: The essential feature is recurrent obsessional thoughts or compulsive acts. Obsessional thoughts are ideas, images, or impulses that enter the patient's mind again and again in a stereotyped form. For an Orthodox Christian, the encounter with the icon is an act of communion with the person represented in the icon.

How much more should our encounters with living icons – persons made in the image and likeness of God – be acts of communion!
