The case against Portugal concerns the Campo Maior, a special protection area in the eastern hinterland of the country which is very important for a range of endangered wild bird species such as the Little Bustard, Tetrax tetrax, the Black-bellied Sandgrouse, Pterocles orientalis, the Lesser Kestrel, Falco naumanni and, the Great Bustard, Otis tarda.
