The international conference organised by the British Museum on the cleaning of the Parthenon marbles from the Acropolis in Athens which were stolen and shipped to London produced new revelations on the damage inflicted on the marbles during attempts to 'clean them up'; research findings were also announced about the way in which they were acquired and transported from their original site, the Acropolis, following extensive and costly bribery of the Ottoman Turks who ruled Athens at the time.
