Researchers funded by the European Union are currently working with Chinese, Tanzanian and South African researchers on preparing clinical trials of possible vaccines.

EDCTP brings together EU Member States plus Norway, African countries, international donors and the pharmaceutical industry in a joint effort to combat these three poverty-linked diseases by facilitating and accelerating phase II phase III clinical trials for new drugs and vaccines.

INCO supports the European Malaria Vaccine Initiative (EMVI) and the African Malaria Vaccine Testing Network (AMVTN).

[17] The initiative already produced tangible results: two European developed malaria vaccines are entering clinical trial this year.

Research will focus on: developing promising candidate interventions (vaccines, therapies and HIV microbicides) against the target diseases by sponsoring research over the full spectrum from basic molecular research, taking advantage of microbial genomics, through to pre-clinical testing and proof-of-principle; establishing a clinical trials programme to unite and support Europe's clinical trial activities specifically targeted at interventions for use in developing countries; establishing an AIDS Therapy Trials Network in Europe to improve the coherence and complementarity of clinical trials of AIDS therapies for European use.
